Excursions from Lido Adriano
The heart of the town centre, with the Rocca Estense and the Pavaglione facing each other, has a distinctive eighteenth-century mark. It is built on a well-structured system of squares, which witnesses the evolution of the solid economic and cultural vitality of the city.
What to see
Opposite the Rocca stands the other nucleus of the city: the Pavaglione, a large quadrilateral building Alfonso II d’Este had built in 1570 to house the market of silkworm cocoons. Designed as a closed four-sided portico and housing several workshops, the Pavaglione has been and is still today the heart of economic and cultural exchanges of the town. To this day, the Pavaglione hosts shows, festivals, historical events as the Contesa Estense, food and wine events as Lugolosa, a weekly market, an Antiques and Collectors' Market and the Biennial Fair of the Romagnola meat. Between the Rocca and the Pavaglione stands the imposing monument to Francesco Baracca from Lugo, a hero of the WW1. On the western side of the Pavaglione there is the Teatro Rossini where important prose works, concerts and an opera season of international prestige are staged every year. Lugo is also famous for its charming green area, Parco del Loto, near the Canale dei Mulini, along which a nice cycle path runs in a special nature itinerary.
